The Estate
Edmus today: A Saint-Emilion Grand Cru with full organic certification
Château Edmus and its grounds
Château Edmus lies in the commune of Saint Sulpice de Faleyrens, one of eight communes making up the Saint Emilion Jurisdiction. The Jurisdiction has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1999, the first vineyard area in the world to make the UNESCO list.
The estate is, quite simply, a gem. Just 1.6 hectares, Edmus is tended by a team of talented winegrowers and watched over with care. Sandy sub-soils with veins of gravel make it the perfect spot for its 0.8 hectares of Merlot and 0.8 hectares of Cabernet-Franc, giving a unique range of stylish wines with natural elegance.
Edmus will soon be home to a new, cutting-edge winery – but that’s another story…
Stéphane Derenoncourt and Romain Bocchio are two of the estate’s key players, having joined the team in 2007. Both agree that it’s attention to the finer details – soil composition, subsoils, exposure, climate etc – that can make or break a wine. This philosophy leads them to produce wines that are inherentely linked to their region of origin and surrounding environement. They appraised the soil and plant matter, identified the right growing methods, and brought the best out of each and every vine. Their work has seen Château Edmus rise triumphant, like a phoenix from the ashes.

Looking to the future – the organic and biodynamic wines of Edmus
“Our time on earth is fleeting, and nothing really belongs to us. I like to think that we can help make our world a better place, and build on the gifts it has given us.” These words, spoken by Laurent David, owner of Edmus, sum up the present and future of Château Edmus in a nutshell. Since Stéphane Derenoncourt and Romain Bocchio arrived in 2007, the Edmus land has been worked in harmony with nature. Previous owners Philip Edmundson and Eric Remus started the conversion to organics with the 2017 vintage, because although the vineyards were already being worked to organic standards, they wanted to achieve official recognition. As it takes 3 years from starting the conversion process to being awarded AB organic certification, it made sense for Laurent David to carry on where his predecessors left off. It was, anyway, very much in keeping with his own philosophy. Laurent’s first vintage, the 2020, will be the first to proudly display the AB logo.
Now Laurent is taking the process a step further; backed by Stéphane Derenoncourt and his team, he has introduced Edmus to biodynamics. Biodynamics is a holistic approach to agriculture. It sees the earth as a living organism and works in rhythm with the earth’s solar and lunar cycles, identifying when best to carry out agricultural operations to achieve a quality product. It’s environmental responsibility in its purest form, getting as close to nature as it’s possible to be.
Edmus : Capturing the best of a Saint-Emilon Grand Cru
Château Edmus’s mission is to make a fine, ultra-elegant, velvety-smooth wine. But although producing a great Saint Emilion is one thing, releasing it at its best is something else entirely. So every year, the Château releases a new vintage – not the latest one, but one that’s ready to enjoy straight away. New wines are bottled, carefully stored in the Edmus cellars for 5 years and released for sale just as they reach perfection.
This year, it’s the turn of our superb 2014 vintage. It’s ready to drink now, but its structure and length give it good ageing potential, and it will keep beautifully in your cellar for a few years yet.

Laurent David’s story
I’m originally from Bergerac, and realised even as a young child that I was fascinated by the world of wine. Thanks to my grandfather, I was able to help with local grape harvests until I turned 18, and acquiring Château Edmus is my childhood dream come true. I’m so proud to be learning how to grow grapes and make wine on a Saint-Emilion Grand Cru estate like Edmus. Before picking up my dream again, I worked for Nokia as Head of France and Benelux, then spent 10 years with Apple, first launching the iPhone in France and then heading up their European Sales Department in London.
Any musical memories?
Queen’s Live Aid performance at Wembley in 1985. It was magical. Pure energy, and the rebirth of Queen, I’d say. And an amazing way to raise funds for the famine in Africa.
Favourite food ?
Anything, as long as I can cook it with my wife and children.
Favourite country ?
Spain, where I spent my Erasmus year, and where my international career started. I love it.
Favourite city ?
London, with its irrepressible energy. I was lucky enough to live there for 3 years with my family.
Favourite animal ?
This has to be a beaver, the only animal to be as much at home in the water as on land. And beavers spend their days playing with the family! ☺
Favourite film ?
The Thomas Crown Affair, the one from 1968. A masterpiece of innovative cinematography, with a soundtrack by Michel Legrand.
Town or country ?
50/50! I’ve got a foot in each, and that’s how I like it.
Your earliest wine memory ?
My third birthday, and a finger dipped in Monbazillac.
